Terror – Pain into Power (2022)

Thanks for taking your time Scott Vogel! We’re looking forward to seeing Terror live in June.

WBB: The Songs are (very) short, but sound quite self-contained. However, were there any discussions / plans to expand them to a more popular length?

SV: Nope. The discuss was to keep them short. Brutal. As hard hitting as possible and for the songs And record to never let up.  At all 110 percent start to finish. Thinking about a “ popular length “ was the furthest thing from out mind to be honest

WBB: The covid-19 situation is slightly relaxing, will there be any more Tour-Dates for Europe in 2022 / 2023?

SV: Yes there fucking will be!!!!* [siehe unten!]

WBB: In an interview from 2018 you said, it's not hard to find new topics to write lyrics about, it's more hard to find a fresh way to say something / finding fresh terms. Can you tell us something about the process of writing the lyrics for your new record? Was there any struggling finding new terms? Cause for me, the topics aren't new for sure, but it all sounds very fresh and very pure.

SV: I think the times we are all living in and the fucking nightmare the world has become has definitely given me reason to write and to be interceptive. So much is going on in this world and the way it separates and eats people alive is devastating and nothing like I’ve never seen before. Adding the brutal music we wrote was a great recipe for true aggressive hardcore.

WBB: For me Hardcore always stands for the most genuine type of respect. You don't judge people because of their outward appearance, you show respect and you get respect. Still a lot of people are afraid of Hardcore- Music / -artists / -fans or at least misunderstand it / them. Is it possible to live a hardcore attitude without being a real fan of this music?

SV: Hmm. That’s interesting.  I guess it could be. Maybe there are people that would not connect with the music and speed and all out aggressiveness of the music but would love the lyrics and thought process and could read zines and learn all about the hardcore mindset and become part of that while still not loving the music.

WBB: Dylan Slocum (vocalist of Spanish Love Songs) once said during a concert that living in L.A. has nothing to do with the bright and shiny movie version of this city. Everybody's struggling for or worried about money. As one who lived in NY and in LA - is there a difference in the city-society? and do you have to be (or at least had to be) part of this society / (sub-)culture to do true hardcore music? Or is it also possible for young people from the suburbs or the rural area to create a real hardcore sound?

SV:I grew up in a smaller city ( buffalo ny ) and lived way outside the city till I became a teenager. So yes it’s very possible. I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years but recently moved back to Buffalo. I like the small city and not being so trapped in life and all it human insanity.

WBB: What has changed in the scene during the last years / decades? Or what's left from the spirit of the late 1980s / early 1990s?

SV: Hardcore will always have the foundation and spirit from the seeds it grew from.  There will always be people holding on to the traditions kept and respecting  the roots but it has to grow and expand and change and ebb and flow. Just like all of us And everything in the world. For better or for worse the changes come and there is just no way to stop that. The internet and social media was the huge turning point for hc just like it affected all things and again it’s wonderful and terrible at the same time.

On The Verge of Violence:

Racial tension at an all time high. / Have we learned nothing in these desperate times. / We hate each other – cause we hate ourselves. / So much blood, on our hands,In this man made hell.[…] / Violence -destroying humanity / Violence -it’s taken our sanity / Violence -watch the youth disappear / this is reality- face your fears

WBB: Reading News here in Germany you get the impression, that the society in the US was continuously separated during the last years. Poor people with three or four jobs still have to fear for their existence, super rich people and lobbying keeps holding them down, racism, unjust laws and politics and a deadlocked Democracy that seems like it hasn't developed since decades. Is this a correct image of american society or is it over exaggerated? And if yes - why isn't everybody listening Hardcore Music or living the way? Are there still too many people, who just don't care - who just don't give a fuck as long as they are getting along?

SV: These are my favorite lyrics on the record and I think they are important. I saw people I love choosing opposite side and fully being torn apart by all the things you saw. So many times, I myself was unsure and feeling hopeless and fearing the unknowing. I think we all know the gov is not trying to save us all And doesn’t have our best interest at heart in so many ways. I tried to navigate the best I knew how and focus on finding some hope in such a fucked up time. Hardcore isn’t for everyone but I’m very grateful I found it and never let go. Music has to be your hope and the scene has to be your bridge to the hope.  Lyrics have to make you think and explore and feel. And the scene has to take you in and protect you and teach you and show you some sort of light and reason to believe in life and humanity.

WBB: Very strong lyrics (probably my favorite on the new record): Born on the bottom / United by our shattered dreams /Tested in these damaged times / Don’t you fucking question me

We all have an imagination of what's meant with this lyrics / song, but I'd like to hear what drove or motivated you writing the lyrics of OUTSIDE THE LIES?

SV: During the pandemic and the death of George Floyd I saw everyone I know be tested and made to show who they are.  In these trying times and through all the anger and uncertainty these lyrics came out to say to myself that I will have to decide for myself who I am and what I stand for.
